Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR) is an all-volunteer organization comprised of individuals who have a passion for the outdoors and for helping others in need. We require no experience in the rescue environment, because we prepare our members with a year-round training regimen that focuses on the skills necessary to work as a team of professional rescuers.
We seek those with a desire to give of themselves in the areas best suited to their personality and physical ability. Our needs are not only for assistance in the backcountry, but also administration, fund raising and community outreach. Based on past experience, our only strict membership requirements are that new members be at least 16 years of age and full-time residents of Grand County, Colorado (members younger than 18 years of age must present a signed parent/guardian release).
All new members must begin their journey with us by attending a multi-day Search and Rescue (SAR) Academy. The SAR Academy is normally held each year between March and May and is followed by an overnight group bivouac in late May. This mandatory event is a skills test for new members to demonstrate what they’ve learned at the Academy.
GCSAR does have minimum attendance requirements for training and response to missions. Our normal trainings are held every Wednesday from 6-8pm. We also conduct various weekend training events throughout the year. While members are not required to attend every training, it is desirable that new members attend most trainings during their first year with the team.
